Tradies National Health Month

Tradies National Health Month is crucial because tradies are at a significantly higher risk for workplace injuries and health issues compared to other professions. Despite making up only 30% of the workforce, tradies account for a large percentage of serious workplace injuries. The nature of their work—often physically demanding and performed in hazardous environments—exposes them to numerous risks, including:

  • Musculoskeletal Injuries: Heavy lifting, repetitive motions, and awkward postures can lead to chronic pain and injuries.
  • Exposure to Hazardous Materials: Tradies frequently work with or around dangerous substances like asbestos, chemicals, and dust.
  • Mental Health Challenges: The high-pressure environment, long hours, and job insecurity can contribute to stress, anxiety, and depression.

Protecting Australia’s Backbone (AKA Tradies)

Back injuries are prevalent among tradies due to the physically demanding nature of their work. From lifting heavy materials to working in awkward positions, tradies’ backs are constantly under strain. Understanding the importance of back safety and implementing preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of injury.

1. The Importance of Proper Lifting

One of the most effective ways to prevent back injuries is by using proper lifting techniques. Always use your legs, not your back, when lifting heavy objects. This means bending at the knees and keeping your back straight while lifting. Additionally, keep the load close to your body to maintain balance and avoid twisting your torso while lifting. Proper lifting techniques distribute the weight more evenly and reduce the strain on your back muscles. Know your limitations and consider a team lift or lifting equipment as better options.

2. Lifting Equipment

Investing in lifting equipment can make a significant difference in reducing back injuries by minimising awkward postures and repetitive motions. Lifting equipment is designed for lifting/lowering and moving of large, heavy and or awkward loads safetly and efficiently. By using these tools, tradies can perform their tasks more comfortably and safely. Examples include hoists, trolleys and overhead cranes.

3. Stretch and Strengthen

Regular stretching and core-strengthening exercises are crucial for maintaining a healthy back. Stretching helps improve flexibility and reduce muscle tension, while strengthening exercises build the muscles that support your spine. You may like to incorporate a few minutes of stretching and warm up exercises into your daily pre-start routine to keep your back in top condition and increase awarenss of back care with your team.

4. Task Rotation

Avoid spending long periods of time in awkward positions or doing repetitive movements. Include regular breaks or task rotations to reduce the risk of stress and strain injuries. If you experience any back pain, take a break and reassess the task. Items to consider are the right tools for the job, planning to eliminating awkward positions. Early intervention is key to preventing minor problems from becoming major ones.

The Consequences of Neglecting Tradie Health and Safety

Failing to prioritise the health and safety of tradies can have severe repercussions, including:

  • Increased Workplace Injuries: Higher rates of accidents and injuries can lead to significant medical expenses and compensation claims.
  • Reduced Productivity: Injuries and poor health can lead to absenteeism, reduced work efficiency, and operational downtime.
  • High Employee Turnover: Unsafe working conditions can cause dissatisfaction and high turnover rates, increasing recruitment and training costs.

Tradies National Health Month serves as a vital reminder of the importance of protecting the health and safety of our tradies. By adopting proactive measures, providing education and support, we can ensure a safer and healthier working environment for these essential workers.

Let’s commit to safeguarding our tradies, not just in August, but year round! 🦺
